Work Life Balance (coined in 1986)
It is a rather precarious tightrope balancing act that is so hard for many people to get right. There can be many pressures from both sides of your life situation. There has been a lot of research put into the development of tools and techniques that will help you make some changes to relieve the causes of the workplace stress and maintain a healthy work life balance. While some people report problems juggling the competing demands of work and home, many workers have suffered from depression and others from panic attacks because they are under so much stress in their job.

Many people work extra hours to their paid hours just to keep up with their workloads. Women are reportedly more likely to do this than men, though over the last 12 months both figures have increased. Choices that many workers have made as they opt to neglect their family and personal life often feeling they have no choice. Once these longer hours are committed to it is difficult to foresee them reducing. Workers state that they couldn’t afford to work less hours for less money.
The European approach sets importance on their social fabric – welfare of children, the quality of life and the bond between community and family. They have implemented regulation for a 48 hour ceiling on their work week. Some European countries have trialed even lower hour work weeks.
Successful parenting and a happy home life requires energy, time, patience and tolerance. A huge ask when you have worked long hours and had a stressful day. Families need nurturing and home provides us with a place where we can be ourselves and truly relax. The problem is that the more we work, the more we long to find such a home and the less time we have to create it. How often do homes unfortunately end up only providing a stop over for sleep, rest and the
bare essentials in the intervals between work?
A work life balanced is one where we learn to divide our energy and efforts between key areas of importance in our life. To neglect of any one of these areas may threaten the harmonious balance of the whole.
